INCREASE IN WATER POLLUTION AND POOR WATER QUALITY
Water pollution in Greater Johannesburg are mainly related to the driving forces outline in the water pollution chapter which include industry, poor sanitation systems, population growth, industry and informal settlements

INCREASE IN LAND POLLUTION
The main driving forces behind and increase in land pollution are:

  • Mining activities

  • Lack of regular refuse removal

  • Broken and non-maintained sewerage pipes

  • Lack of regular refuse removal and excessive loads of refuse to be treated due to overcrowding

  • Absence of toilet facilities and ignorant littering

NOISE POLLUTION
GJ’s urban areas derive its vibrancy and spontaneity from modern and technologically advanced equipment and instruments. Neon disco lights, blarring motor vehicles, heavy loaded trucks and industrial machinery increases the general level of noise in the city. Night clubs, sewage works and increased vehicles and industries are aggrevating the problem

UNHEALHTY HOME ENVIRONMENTS
The World Health Organization (WHO) has listed several requirements for healthy housing including:

  • Adequate housing supply
  • Safe and adequate water supply
  • Sanitary disposal of excreta
  • Disposal of solid waste
  • Drainage of surface water
  • Structural safe guards against disease transmission
  • Siting of dwellings in relation to noise, industrial pollution and hazards from waste dumps
  • Prevention of indoor air pollution
