PRESSURES IN PARKS

|
- There is great disparity in the provision of parks and recreational areas in the
metropolitan area. The quantity and quality of these spaces in the south is much less than
those in the north. The northern suburbs, often referred to as the "garden"
suburbs of the metropolitan area, have a greater quantity of such facilities, including
access to large open spaces like golf courses, racetracks, open fields, etc.
- The southern parts of Greater Johannesburg do not enjoy access to many parks and
recreational facilities.
- The more built up an area becomes the more pressure is brought to bear on them, due to
increased competition for the alternative use of park space for housing, for business and
industrial development.
