All hands on deck: Women leading solutions for environmental Sustainability
The Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi will be hosting the third Women and Environment Conference on the 13-15 August 2008 at the Ranch Hotel in Limpopo.
The 2008 conference will demonstrate the country’s commitment to international conventions and agreements that seek to bring women at the forefront of sustainable development processes. The event will include Conference Plenary with four roundtable sessions broadly focusing on strategies to strengthen women’s role in the fight against climate change, finding solutions for sustainable and affordable energy sources and improving livelihoods towards growing the second economy. Delegates will represent relevant government departments, business, Academia, NGO’s, and civil society groupings.

These pages are new and have been developed in order to provide
a comprehensive resource of information, links and publications
on climate change and ozone layer protection and the action
being taken to address these issues both globally and here
in South Africa.
Cartagena Protocol
on Biodiversity Roster of Experts
The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety sets out the first international
legal framework for the cross-border movement of GMOs on
the basis of the 'precautionary principle'. Countries shipping
GMOs for intentional introduction into the environment will
have to give prior notification to the importing country
that is a Party to the Protocol under the Advance Informed
Agreement (AIA) procedure.
South African
National Waste Management Strategy Implementation Project
This site is a specific NWMSI-project web site. The web
site serves as an electronic " newsletter", hereby providing
project participants, stakeholders and other interested parties
with a quick and easy communication and information mechanism.
Results, reports, discussion documents and lessons learned
from pilot projects or other sources will be published here.
The site will also be used as a discussion forum where you
can provide input and ask questions. At a later stage key
document will be transferred to the official Department of
Environmental Affairs and Tourisms (DEAT) web site www.environment.gov.za.

Strategy and Action Plan
The National Spatial Biodiversity Assessment Executive
Summary and Technical Reports (including Terrestrial,
River, Estuary and Marine components) are now
available.

celebrates 10 Years of Freedom
The year 2004 will be a landmark for South Africa, as it will
be marking a decade of the country’s democracy. During
this year South Africans with many others around the world, will
be taking stock of the country’s development since 1994,
whilst defining challenges to be addressed in the next decade.
Also during this period a range of celebrations will be taking
place inside and outside the county.
Wild Coast Spatial
Development Initiative Pilot Programme
This is the report of the Mid-Term Review (MTR) team appointed
to review the "Support to the Wild Coast Spatial Development
Initiative Pilot Programme". This 4-year Programme that started
in March 2000 aims to achieve tangible and economic and social
development of previously disadvantaged communities (PDCs) both
in terms of job creation and income generation.
World Parks
Congress
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Vth
World Congress on Protected Areas, or IUCN Vth World Parks Congress
as it has become known, is a 10 yearly event which provides the
major global forum for setting the agenda for protected areas.
Tourism: Business
Development Projects and Programmes
The responsibility of Tourism Business Development is to undertake
tourism development planning, investment promotion and small
business support and development. This work is guided by the
objective of transforming the tourism industry for the benefit
of all South Africans.
SADC Regional
Environmental Education Programmey
The purpose of the Regional Environmental Education Programme
is to enable environmental education practitioners in the SADC
region to strengthen environmental education processes for equitable
and sustainable environmental management choices. The Department
of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) supports and contributes
towards enhancing and strengthening environmental education policy,
networking, the development of resource materials and capacity-building.

The National Environmental Education Programme is a collaborative
project coordinated by the Department of Education. Its purpose
is to support teachers in implementing environmental education
at schools, and integrate it with the outcomes-based curriculum.
The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) supports
NEEP with resource materials on contemporary environmental issues.

Town Competition Winners 2003
The National Environmental Education Programme is a collaborative
project coordinated by the Department of Education. Its purpose
is to support teachers in implementing environmental education
at schools, and integrate it with the outcomes-based curriculum.
The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) supports
NEEP with resource materials on contemporary environmental issues.
The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism is actively
participating in this year's Imbizo Focus Week to be held on
13 March 2003 to 6 April 2003. Imbizo Focus Week is one of the
many community outreach programmes that the Department is actively
involved with this year.
Transfrontier
Conservation Areas
Nature recognises no borders. In many cases, neither do people.
Transfrontier conservation areas bring job opportunities and
a better life to people while protecting valuable ecosystems;
they also help build closer relationships between neighbouring
countries.
Social Responsibility Programme
The purpose of DEAT’s Social Responsibility Programme is the creation of temporary employment and skills development opportunities in the sphere of environment and tourism for unemployed people through the implementation of labour intensive projects under the auspices of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP)
SA Welcome Campaign
The SA Welcome Campaign was launched to spearhead the building
of a tourism nation. It aims to increase South African awareness
of the importance of tourism to the growth of our economy.
Waste Management
Programme
This programme has a strong poverty-relief focus. It comprises
a number of projects that have created more than 700 jobs in
eight provinces.
World Heritage
Convention Programme
Since ratification of the UNESCO’s World Heritage Convention
in 1997, South Africa has had seven properties inscribed as World
Heritage Sites on the World Heritage List.
State of the
Environment Project
South Africa has a large amount of information on the state of
its environment, which has been captured in a national State
of the Environment Report. Five metropolitan areas have produced
their own reports, while provincial reports are also being compiled.
Spatial development
initiatives
Several areas of great natural beauty and cultural significance,
and with high potential for income-generation through natural-resource
management, have been identified as SDIs.
CoastCare
The CoastCare programme consists of projects and products that
contribute to the goals and objectives of DEAT's coastal
policy.
CITES(Convention
on International Trade in Endangered Species)
The SA CITES Implementation Project seeks to bring South Africa's
legislation and permitting structures in line with CITES requirements.
