INTRODUCTION

The 13 th Session of the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD 13) commenced on Monday 11 April and will culminate on Friday, 22 April 2005 with the adoption of the Chairman's Report. CSD 13 will function as the “policy” session of the first-two year “implementation cycle,” with a focus on water, sanitation and human settlements. This session is expected to take policy decisions on practical measures and options to expedite implementation. Beginning with this cycle and continuing with every cycle in the Commission's new multi-year programme of work, CSD-13 will tackle the thematic issues in this case Water, Sanitation and Human Settlements - in conjunction with the cross-cutting issues, as agreed at CSD-11.

As with all other sessions of the Commission on Sustainable Development, this session includes a High Level Segment which will be attended by Ministers in the relevant portfolios in UN member states from Wednesday 20 April to Friday 22 April 2005 . The High Level segment culminates with the adoption of the draft decisions emerging from the interactive discussions on Turning Political Commitments into Action .
