Provincial reports

provinces3.gif - 10022 BytesThe National State of Environment Report (launched in October 1999) was designed to improve access to relevant, accurate, up-to-date environmental information on the state of the environment in accordance with Section 31(1)(a) of NEMA. Apart from the national state of the environment report, several metropolitan reports were completed as part of a cities state of environment initiative.

Recently there have been several requests from provinces for assistance with state of the environment reporting processes in provinces. The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism values the interest of provinces to compile provincial state of the environment reports and has secured funding to assist provinces in this regard. Apart from funding, the department is investigating training and capacity building opportunities in state of the environment reporting. We have also produced a guideline document on state of the environment reporting to assist provinces and local authorities wishing to compile state of the environment reports.

In the late 1990's, draft state of the environment reports were completed for for Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and North West Province. These reports were however not published on the Internet. The following provinces are currently assisted by the National Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, with financial assistance from NORAD, to complete provincial state of the environment reports on the Internet.
